The difference between Product vs Process Art

CatArt-67.jpg

Product Focused: Growing up, most of the art projects I created in school focused on an end result. The teacher would say, “Today we are going to make a frog out of construction paper” and then continued directing us step by step. Each student followed along to replicate the teacher’s example. The end result was 24 almost identical frogs hung on the classroom wall. They were all green and anatomically correct.

Process Focused: When the focus is put on the process of creating, your natural talents and uniqueness will shine. Using the frog example from above, a teacher could have set up the lesson by placing a variety of items out to create with. The children could have options such as variety of paper colors, popsicle sticks, buttons pipe cleaners, paint, markers, glitter, glue etc. The teacher then would prompt the children “Today we are going to make frogs” and here are the materials you can choose from to create your frog. When the children were done the teacher would display them on the wall, but this time the frogs would come in all shapes and colors. They would have any number of eyes and legs, aesthetically pleasing and be unique to each individual child.
